Terra Contractors, Inc. was founded by Bill Mayers in 1994, but our roots go back much farther than that. Bill's construction experience started very early in his life, under the watchful eye of his father, Jack Mayers.
The late Backhoe Jack Mayers, as he was known to many, started in the excavation business in 1970 under the business name Backhoe Jack. He was known as a friendly and fair businessman in his area of operation. He did excavation and septic work in the residential and commercial construction markets. Beginning at age 8, Bill "helped" his father on jobs during the weekends. At age 14 Bill worked most afternoons as well as weekends. By the 1980s Backhoe Jack Inc. employed 15 to 25 people. It had added road building and site development for condominimums, retirement communities to its services. In the mid-80s the company name changed to Mayers Incorporated to change its public preception. Mayers Incorporated employed 50 to 60 people. It added larger earth moving projets and more complicated under ground utilities construction services. This business operated successfully for over 20 years, when in 1992 it closed its doors due to the economic climate of the early 1990s. Jack and Bill Mayers spent a lot of time together during these years. Backhoe Jack was very patient with his son. He shared all the experiences of this business with him, and encouraged him to step out of his comfort zone and rise to new challenges.
